Oregon State University traces its roots back in 1856, around the time when Corvallis Academy was founded, representing the 1st community school in the area for primary and preparatory education. Later, Corvallis Academy became Corvallis College, then Corvallis State Agricultural College, Oregon Agricultural College (OAC), in 1890, changing its name several times again afterwards, until March, 1961, when, finally, the current name of the university was adopted, due to a legislative act signed into law by Governor Mark Hatfield.
Since it was founded, more than 200 000 people have attended classes at Oregon State, which is one of the 73 land-grant universities in the world, offering over 200 academic degree programs, including in public health, biochemistry, zoology and nuclear engineering, in which according to U.S. News & World Report, the university occupies the 8th place in the nation.
The academic programs are divided into 12 colleges and 2 schools, each divided into departments that are responsible for academic programs leading to certificates, degrees, minors and options. Among the colleges and schools at Oregon State there is the College of Agricultural Sciences, Defense Education College (ROTC), College of Veterinary Medicine and College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences.
The athletic teams from Oregon State are known as the Oregon State Beavers, who compete in the NCAA in various sports, including basketball, football, baseball and softball. The current mascot is Benny the Beaver, who first made his appearance in 1952. The university is home of the oldest Marching Band in the PAC-10, which was started in 1890, becoming a staple at Beaver Football games.
